So why does the South seem to have more than it's share of outcast visionaries and mad genius?. Everywhere you look below the Mason-Dixon line you can find evidence of men who have been touched with visions and are seeking to enlighten others with the hidden knowledge their minds possess. And these are just the ones that make their statements bold enough for the public to notice. How many others keep their knowledge secret? I'm betting many a small southern town has it's reclusive hermit. A man or woman who knows the darker secrets of the mind than they let on to the casual passerby.
But what touches off this enlightened state of being? Is it something in the Southern aquifer? Is there some strange gas let off by the kudzu that drives a person slowly toward this brilliant dementia? Or is it just the ever-present cloying scent of southern hospitality that can drive a person mad? Does the phrase "killing you with kindness" hold a deeper meaning when applied to the drawling lilt of "thank ya" and "y'all come back now, ya' hear?"
Maybe I'm searching too deep for answers. Maybe there is no unifying theory to explain the off center genius I've seen time and time again. Of course I've lived all my life in the South. Maybe I'm too close to the epicenter of this activity to have an impartial observance. Then again, I do run this website, maybe I'm touched by the same aberrance that I seek to understand.
