These seem like basic initiatory dreams to me. They show you a brother, a counterpart self, who is 'on the other side' (of a place, knowledge, the initiatory process itself). He is trying to draw you into something you find so fearful that he is taunting you with it by saying, Like a lamb to the slaughter. If you look at shamanic initiations, they usually involve being dismembered by spirits and then put back together. This process does involve a sort of psychic dismemberment, but it only takes this violent form because of the fury of your resistance. I have dreamed of having an eye in my hand; it is a classic occult symbol: the conjoining or overlapping of senses and capabilities which to the uninitiated seem as separate as sight and touch. The hand is also capable of manipulating--transforming and using--objects such as tools. If you suggest to yourself before sleeping that you will learn to use this capability, it will help you overcome your fearfulness. That the symbol was actually in a book your brother admired means you may have glimpsed it before and 'forgot' it, but it may be spookier; you may have actually gotten the suggestion to look for the book from his mind.
