The Worst Day (The Cave)
The journal of the second day is a little more interesting so here it is… As I sit writing this I am amazed we are still here and not on our way back to Arizona, and home. It was the worst day I; or, for that matter, Ron, has ever had on a ‘vacation.’ At least it started out that way. We now know our paranoia of being watched the night before was justified. Instead of kidding each other of having such wild unjustified behavior last night, we find ourselves having to take a trip to the nearest town, which of course meant no exploration for us at all today. I awoke to a very upset friend shaking me and apparently shouting as well, because I could barely here words. Fumbling around to find my hearing aid, I finally managed to get it turned on and realized why Ron was so upset. Apparently he wasn’t going to get his breakfast that mourning, …Ron can’t go without… for all of our stuff had been taken during the night. Even though there was a little food in the Blazer, it was all the kind that required some sort of preparation, except for a measly bag of greasy potato chips, not even the good kind. I gave them to ‘tough guy’ and he was somewhat satiated. Well, the only choice was take the camp down and head for town, but considering what happened I just wanted to go home, and I think Ron would have agreed had I voiced it. It was two hours there and two hours back plus eating and shopping.
Well, after eating and shopping we bumped, or was it? Were bumped into, what was a very old local looking fellow. He says to Ron, “be careful were you go, youngen” This angered Ron off but I stepped in and quickly apologized for bumping into him. At which he starts laughing or was it snickering and looks me in the eye and says, “I was talking about were you are going, what you two need is some schoolin.” I could tell Ron was on the verge of exploding when he looks at him sort of a up and down glance and says, “Humph, Indian I believe; On your mothers side, about two, no three generations back. Did you know you have family right around these parts?” All I could do was remain silent at that one, because it invoked a whole lot of different emotions. First there was the look on Ron’s face, and that was enough to send me into a howling laugh. Then there was the fact he was right, and that stopped the laugh cold. Then he looks at me and says, “well I guess you two are alright, for a couple of tourist.” Slowly nodding as he said it. Finishing with, “You go right ahead and see what you find, your welcome to it.” Adding, “But don’t think that’s some sort of invitation, cause it aint.” Walking away and looking back he finished with, “Hope you two are up to it.” And, I thought I heard him say cause this morning’s problem won’t compare, if you don’t pass. But, Ron would not confirm it and said he heard nothing like that at all. You know me with my hearing aids, I sometimes get things mixed up and misinterpreted, so I blew it off. But once in the four by, I asked him if he just wanted to call it quits, and that’s as far as I got. I knew we were going through with this, as Ron would drag me kicking and screaming if he had to.
We decided to camp as close to the cave as we could get, seemed safer there. Instead of the feeling of being watched, it was just quiet, a little too quiet, even for me! I’m used to quiet. Ron really didn’t talk much that night, he just wanted to crash early so we could get to the cave right after sunrise. He seemed anxious …Well day two down, there’s a little more stuff about preparations and supply’s, but nothing more; catch you on the next time.
