I was pretty interested now. I guess consumed would be a better word. The next visit to Peaceful Meadows I planned to find our who this Josef was. I began by asking the head nurse. "Did there used to be a man named Josef spelled with a "f" that stayed here?" "What you wanna know about Josef for," she asked while signing her reports. "Well, someone mentioned him to me and I was just wondering about him," I said. "Josef Smith was a man who stayed here and he was not a nice man," she stated bluntly. "I do not like to lose my patients but I can honestly say that I was not sad to see him go," she added. "What happened", I asked. "He died, massive stroke, probably from all of the miserable thoughts that clouded his brain," she said and began working while silently dismissing me." Suddenly a plaque on the wall for some kind of nursing honor fell off making a loud thud. We both were startled. "Stupid thing, keeps falling off, I ought to just leave it off," she said exasperated. Quickly thinking I asked if I could go to the library and check out books that some of the patients requested. "Okay, she said, and you may use it as time served, God knows we don't need another death. I was unnerved about that comment but remembered the statement that I had to learn so I could keep myself out of trouble: "There are situations where you should keep your mouth shut, take advantage of them." The nurse had done just what I wanted, given me his last name, I never asked for it. Smith seemed so common. The library excuse gave me some time to go look up the name. At the library I looked in the City Newspaper for any articles on Josef Smith. I found four. The most recent was an announcement for auctioning off his possessions, he obviously had no family. His obituary (courtesy of Peaceful Meadows) explained he had no known relatives, no middle name and was born in Utah. He worked as a chemist for most of his life. The other two articles were interesting. One was a story about Josef Smith's car accidents, apparently he had killed at least three people with his vehicle, pedestrians. He was found to be suffering from dementia. It referred to the another article in which Josef had been blasted by the Humane Society and PETA for cruelty to animals. Apparently he had been performing painful experiments on dogs, cats, and rabbits. There was nothing written as to what he was doing he refused to say, but he ceased, or so he said, working on animals. This guy was getting interesting. A picture of him was posted in the car article. His eyes seemed to be looking right at me. There was nothing pleasant about his face. I realized the time and had to get back. I grabbed some recent novels on the way. When I got home that evening I freaked. "Written in ink on my carpet, were the words "STAY AWAY" Stay tuned. comments welcome Like one in our own degenerate city's dress. Ah me!-what wounds both old and new I see Where flames had burned their limbs: the same distress Io
