In 1994, long before the flood of attention that the Web has enjoyed and before there was a Netscape, a number of artists, programmers and media engineers began to experiment with the potential of the Web under the name the Radiation Group. Designing a number of commercial and non-commercial websites, the RadGroup attempted to retain its non-linear co-opt structure, while expanding to offer quality design services to the first crop of businesses joining us on the Web.
Then the wave crashed, and 1995 brought a greater demand for commercial web development than we had ever imagined. From the founders of the RadGroup a team emerged, focused on long-term contribution to the emerging world of cyberspace. By the end of spring, we had formalized GlobalMedia Design, Inc. and moved into our first Winter Park, Florida offices. While continuing our award-winning design work for clients, we began a broader range of educational programs, dedicated time to developing highly flexible server software packages, and began to launch "online ventures" of our own. Our reputation for high-end design customized to demanding client requirements earned us recognition as one of the leading new media design firms in the world.
By early 1997, GlobalMedia Design began to look less and less like what the phrase "web design firm" was coming to mean, focusing instead on our own online projects rather than the lucrative (but frequently mundane) world of "commercial design". While we continued to receive awards for work we did for clients, more people online knew us through our other brands: the entertainment industry knew us as "the people behind filmmag.com and indieWIRE", webmasters knew us as "the search engine experts at Rank This!" or "the Radiation software geeks", and the general public came to know us as content creators through The Slant and Hong Kong 1997.
