HISTORY: 2001 - 2004

When the Internet Bubble began to burst in earnest, the headlines were filled with stories about venture capital-funded companies closing, having never turned a profit. Trillions of dollars in market value evaporated in less than 3 years and public technology companies declaring bankruptcy became commonplace. If you believed the investment news reports, the Web was proving to be a bust, or at the very least not everything it was cracked up to be.

Many companies, like GMD Studios, did weather that storm. You might even argue we benefited from the thinning of the herd. A vacuum followed the "that didn't work" realizations of the bust, and that in turn collected many of the surviving ideas and companies under broad new terms like participatory media, crossover or Web 2.0. From our perspective, we had been advancing the same sorts of experiments since 1994, but now they were suddenly coming into vogue among other "dot com survivors."

Johnny Meah hates it when we call him a "living treasure," but we think he is. You've seen artistic styles influenced by his work, even though most of Johnny's original work was thrown away when the sideshow moved on to the next town. In a collaboration with Mike Monello, the "Czar of Bizarre" attempts to recapture a bit of that sideshow magic while slinging a little art as well. Step right up!
